The U.S. Senate narrowly confirmed Todd Blanche as attorney general on Saturday, approving President Donald Trump’s nominee in a 50-49 vote after weeks of Republican divisions over his nomination, according to Reuters. Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voted against Blanche, while Senator Bill Cassidy cast the deciding vote after saying he believed Blanche was the best candidate Trump was likely to nominate. Blanche had served as acting attorney general since April and previously held the Justice Department’s second-highest position. As attorney general, Blanche will lead a Department of Justice that has undergone significant changes during Trump’s second term. During Blanche’s tenure as acting attorney general, the department pursued cases against Trump’s political opponents, saw the departure of numerous career prosecutors, and said it was operating under the president’s direction, a shift critics say departed from longstanding norms of Justice Department independence.
