The United States announced a $1 billion security assistance package for Colombia on Friday as conservative President Abelardo de la Espriella was sworn into office, signaling closer ties between Bogotá and the Trump administration, according to the BBC.
The U.S. State Department said the funding would support shared priorities, including combating organized crime, curbing illegal immigration, strengthening border security cooperation, and expanding economic ties.
The announcement came as de la Espriella, an ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, took office after winning June’s presidential election.
De la Espriella said he would abandon the previous administration’s policy of negotiating with armed groups in favor of military action and the construction of large prisons.
De la Espriella replaces leftist President Gustavo Petro, whose government frequently clashed with the Trump administration over foreign and security policy.
