Federal Judge Clears Way For Trump to End Deportation Protections for South Sudanese Nationals

A federal judge on Friday allowed the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for South Sudan, clearing the way for hundreds of South Sudanese nationals to lose temporary protection from deportation and work authorization in the United States, according to Reuters.
U.S. District Judge Patti Saris in Boston rejected a last-minute request by immigrant-rights advocates to keep South Sudan’s TPS designation in place.
The ruling follows a U.S. Supreme Court decision in June that allowed the administration to end similar protections for migrants from Haiti and Syria.
The decision affects more than 232 South Sudanese nationals currently protected under TPS, as well as at least 73 applicants with pending cases.
She said the plaintiffs’ interpretation was “self-contradictory” because it would also invalidate DHS’s previous extensions of TPS for South Sudan.
