The observation took place on July 28 near Kingscliff, on Australia’s northeastern New South Wales coast, during the annual migration of humpback whales. It was a newly born humpback whale calf. Rare Humpback Birth Reveals a Calf’s First Moments ©Alexander Forrest/ORRCAAccording to Live Science, Forrest said the recording is believed to be the first drone video showing a complete live birth of a humpback whale. An ORRCA spokesperson also said that humpback whale births have been filmed only three other times, making this the fourth recorded example of the event more generally. Around 50,000 humpback whales travel along the coast as they move from feeding grounds in Antarctica toward warmer tropical breeding areas.
