What people may be noticing instead is the contrast between gray roots and hair that has been colored to an ash blonde, Kales said. “As the gray grows in, the lack of pigment in the roots can cause the hair to look thinning or patchy,” she explained. “So when it’s freshly dyed, the contrast is greater and thus looks fuller, which would explain some of the changes we observe with the president’s overall look.”
