Simón Bolívar, the Liberator, defined Our America as the product of a heritage that was not solely Spanish or European. For Bolívar, unity and social justice are central elements. In contrast to this line of thought stands the Monroe Doctrine. In fact, in the words of the Argentine intellectual Atilio Borón, he was the one who translated the Monroe Doctrine into geopolitics. The Monroe Doctrine is attempting to survive what is now the obvious decline of the US empire.
