By: |A Surprising Social Behavior in the WildWild chimpanzees have once again demonstrated how closely their behavior can resemble our own. Researchers have documented chimpanzees not only eating naturally fermented fruit that contains small amounts of alcohol but also sharing it with one another. The observations were made in Guinea-Bissau, where motion-activated cameras recorded chimpanzees repeatedly sharing fermented African breadfruit. Although the fruit contained relatively low alcohol levels, the findings mark the first documented case of wild chimpanzees deliberately sharing alcoholic food in a social setting. This suggests the fermented fruit may provide benefits beyond nutrition, potentially strengthening relationships within the group.
