David Lafferty spent 130 days alone in Gough's Cave at Cheddar Gorge in 1966, earning the title of “world champion caveman” after setting the world record for the longest stay underground.
Mr Lafferty, who was in the RAF and stationed at Locking, entered the cave in March of that year, eventually emerging in August.

When Robertson informed him he had broken the record, Mr Lafferty replied: "Wow!
In tribute to the achievement, Cheddar Gorge & Caves recently opened a new exhibition titled Endurance 66, exploring the story of Mr Lafferty’s challenge and his life below ground.
