Somerset Council's executive committee voted in March to begin a root-and-branch review of Somerset car parking charges, which could see a new 'tiered' pricing structure introduced for both on- and off-street parking.
He said: "With the county-wide parking review due back to this committee shortly, I’m keen to ensure that any changes to parking charges in the Cheddar division, including Axbridge and Shipham, are supported by evidence that such a change will benefit our rural communities.
"There is remarkably little evidence that introducing parking charges in small rural communities either improves parking management or supports local economies.
"They also acknowledge that rural and village locations have very different characteristics and needs from larger urban centres.
The proposals will also be discussed by the council's climate, environment and place scrutiny committee on Thursday, September 3.
