Construction of Uganda’s regional cancer centres is taking shape, with work already underway in Mbale as the government seeks to ease patient overcrowding at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala and reduce the burden of long-distance travel for cancer patients. According to Uganda Cancer Institute Executive Director Dr Jackson Orem, construction of the Arua centre is expected to start soon, while preparations are also underway for the groundbreaking of the Mbarara facility. Dr Orem made the remarks at the Uganda Cancer Institute during the handover of 20 wheelchairs donated by the Grant Thornton Foundation to support cancer patients receiving care at the facility.
