PSL TURNS 30 | The year 1996 and day one of the PSL
[]
Kick Off
Nelson Mandela was the State President, and football matches were still being played at George Goch Stadium, Independence Stadium, HM Pitje Stadium, Johannesburg Stadium, Caledonian Stadium, Odi Stadium, PAM Brink Stadium, and George Thabe Stadium.
Then came the PSL, which had its first matches on the night of Friday, August 9, 1996 – both being coastal derbies.
Manning Rangers were at home to AmaZulu FC at Chatsworth Stadium, while in the Mother City, Cape Town Spurs met city rivals Hellenic at the Green Point Stadium.
Then, in the Western Cape, Spurs versus Hellenic defined a classic Cape Town derby back then, pregnant with tension and ferocity both on and off the field.
As the PSL celebrates 30 years today, only Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Siwelele (previously named SuperSport United and Pretoria City) have been forever present in the PSL's 30 years.
