Dhaka, Bangladesh – A nationwide public opinion survey conducted by the International Republican Institute’s (IRI) Center for Insights in Survey Research shows that most Bangladeshis view the country’s democratic trajectory positively, with 62 percent describing the state of democracy as somewhat or very good. At the same time, respondents identified key areas for improvement: 83 percent said there is a significant disconnect between political elites and the public. “Bangladesh is on a positive trajectory following the February 2026 parliamentary elections,” said Johanna Kao, Senior Director for Asia-Pacific at IRI. “The country has made important progress in rebuilding trust in democratic institutions, but strengthening democracy is an ongoing process that will require continued reforms and sustained political commitment.” MethodologyThe survey was conducted on behalf of IRI’s Center for Insights in Survey Research by a local research firm.
