Wessex Water has made the appeal as the west of England faces the prospect of formal restrictions amid ongoing high demand, prolonged dry weather and heatwaves.
Wessex Water (Image: Wessex Water)Will Willoughby, director of water supply at Wessex Water, said: "We know that a hosepipe ban would not be welcome news for our customers, especially during the summer holidays.
Wessex Water recommends several measures to reduce water use, including letting lawns go brown, using watering cans instead of hoses or sprinklers, reusing washing up water for patio pots, and covering paddling pools to reduce evaporation.
Households across the South West are being asked by Wessex Water to continue to use water wisely and cut back on non-essential use to avoid restrictions being introduced this summer.
Customers can find more information and advice about saving water on the Wessex Water website.
