British Columbia Wildfire Triggers Mass Evacuations
[]
teleSUR English
A provincial state of emergency was declared in British Columbia, Canada, on Saturday, after the Bald Range wildfire forced more than 20,000 people out of Summerland, Peachland, and adjacent valley communities.
Summerland, a town of about 12,000, was ordered fully emptied, along with roughly 8,000 residents of neighboring Peachland and surrounding valleys.
Thousands of people in Summerland, B.C., are being evacuated as intense wildfires threaten their community.
Minister Kelly Greene signed the emergency order, unlocking provincial powers to curb non‑essential travel and secure shelter for evacuees.
Across British Columbia, over 100 wildfires are active, nearly half uncontained; operations chief Cliff Chapman cautioned that other communities could face comparable risks should the unfavorable weather hold.
