Fort Apache: The noisy Massachusetts studio that helped define the sound of 1990s alt-rock

Recalling a 1981 Paul Newman movie about a cop working in a similarly rough neighbourhood in New York (Fort Apache, The Bronx), Harvard decided to call the studio ‘Fort Apache’ as a tongue-in-cheek reference to its dangerous location.
Business was steady enough that Joe Harvard was able to open a second Fort Apache studio in kinder confines, a Camp Street building in Cambridge, Mass, home of his alma mater and namesake, Harvard University.
The Blake Babies were a classic Fort Apache tale; much like the Pixies, they’d been spotted opening for Throwing Muses by the ever-vigilant Gary Smith.
This reputation helped encourage many artists from well beyond the Boston city limits to come to Fort Apache for their own recording or mixing needs.
“Sean [Slade] and Paul [Kolderie] are super-talented guys,” the Bosstones’ Dicky Barrett said, recalling his band’s early, pre-fame forays into Fort Apache.
