A timeline of how CBGB became the cornerstone of music evolution in the 1970s“Our shithole” is the beautifully poetic phrase Patti Smith opted to use when describing CBGB’s.
1975 Patti Smith, Talking Heads and Blondie perform at CBGB While the first couple of years were no doubt immensely successful for CBGB, 1975 was when everything shifted, with the club welcoming several names that would long be associated with the ultimate embodiment of musical excellence: Patti Smith, Talking Heads, Blondie, and more.
1977 Talking Heads’ debut album Talking Heads release their debut album, Talking Heads: 77, in September 1977, home to their career-defining track, ‘Psycho Killer’.
However, they were somewhat of an anomaly in the broader CBGB scene, with a musical offering that approached different musical styles with more care and consideration.
Many other major names followed, including Misfits, The B-52’s, The Cramps, and Joan Jett, to continue solidifying CBGB as a mainstay of New York’s thriving punk scene.
