Businesses need to engage with the debate early and help shape the agenda, rather than simply react once decisions are made. I recently met Dr Ruth Adams, newly appointed chief executive of the Hampshire and Solent Combined County Authority, to discuss what these changes mean for the Isle of Wight. There’s a genuine desire to understand the Island’s unique circumstances and ensure devolution benefits the whole area, not just the mainland centres. The scale of opportunity is significant, with substantial investment and devolved powers over skills, transport, housing, and economic development. The Isle of Wight punches above its weight: world-class manufacturers, innovative tech businesses, thriving tourism and hospitality, and a growing reputation in renewable energy and advanced engineering.
