Queen Victoria's memorial location chosen - Island days gone by

125 Years AgoAugust 10, 1901The county council held a meeting to discuss a suitable site for the Island memorial to the late Queen Victoria, with the choice between the Newport market site and in front of the county buildings at Node Hill.
The Newport market site was chosen, although there was concern that a monument might seem inappropriate among cattle, pigs and sheep at the market.
75 Years AgoAugust 11, 1951Holidaymakers on a fishing trip were rescued off Fort Victoria, Yarmouth, after their outboard motor was swept away.
50 Years AgoAugust 7, 1976Labour councillor Morris Barton left his party after 15 years and joined the Liberals, telling the County Press he could not support the government’s policies.
