Jersey City Councilmen Frank “Educational” Gilmore and Michael Griffin are calling for more protections for city tenants living in tax abated buildings.
By John Heinis/Hudson County View“With the median rent exceeding $2,000 per month, and nearly 15.6% of Jersey City residents living in poverty, protecting affordability for tenants in tax abated properties is critical to protecting residents,” Griffin said in a statement.
The councilmen’s offices are reviewing are laws prohibiting owners of tax abated properties from passing future tax increases onto tenants, establishing a centralized rental registry that cross-references annual property tax assessments with tenant rent rolls (while redacting tenant’s sensitive personal information).
“We cannot allow tax abated properties to receive special treatment while longtime residents are priced out of the very communities their tax dollars helped build.
“For far too long, Jersey City residents have suffered and fixed the mistakes of previous administrations.
