In a move to protect the integrity of U.S. citizenship, President Trump signed two new executive orders on Thursday, Aug. 6, in an effort to permanently end “birth tourism” and limit birthright citizenship in the United States. The first order Trump signed nonexhaustively listed different people who are not allowed to obtain automatic citizenship even if born on U.S. soil, such as the children of foreign emissaries and terrorists. The new executive orders are not the Trump administration’s first attempt to restrict this type of loophole citizenship. Additionally, in the summer of 2025, the Trump administration signed an executive order that similarly sought to deny birthright citizenship to U.S.-born children whose parents lacked U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency. However, the 2025 executive order was ruled unconstitutional in Trump v. Barbara in June 2026.
