Mexico and Peru have agreed to restore diplomatic relations after Mexico granted asylum to Peru’s former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who was accused of conspiracy in connection with former President Pedro Castillo’s failed 2022 attempt to dissolve Congress, according to the BBC. Relations deteriorated after Chávez sought asylum at the Mexican Embassy in Lima in November 2025. Peru’s Foreign Minister Carlos Espá told local broadcaster RPP that Chávez had been granted safe passage and had already left Peru for Mexico. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed Chávez during her daily news briefing and reiterated her government’s support for Peru’s former President Pedro Castillo. The restoration of diplomatic relations comes a week after Peru’s new president, Keiko Fujimori, took office.
