A New Mexico judge on Thursday ordered Meta to pay $567 million into a teen mental health fund and implement sweeping changes to protect young users after finding the company responsible for creating a public nuisance that harmed children’s well-being, according to Reuters. The ruling follows a jury verdict five months ago ordering Meta to pay $375 million for violating the state’s consumer protection law by misrepresenting the safety of Facebook and Instagram for young users. The case is one of a growing number of lawsuits accusing social media companies of harming young users. More than 40 U.S. states and over 1,300 school districts have filed public nuisance lawsuits seeking damages and changes to social media platforms. Meta is also defending a similar lawsuit brought by Tennessee.
