A recent analysis by Climate Trends, a Delhi-based research organisation, highlights how warming in the Himalayas, intense rainfall, shifting river dynamics, and expanding human settlements in vulnerable areas are intensifying the crisis. Assam’s geography has always made it prone to flooding, with nearly 40 percent of its land classified as flood-prone. The report notes that rising temperatures in the Himalayas are accelerating glacial melt, contributing to erratic river behaviour. Human activity has further compounded the problem, as settlements continue to expand into flood-prone zones, increasing exposure to disaster.
