As the Wisconsin State Fair kicks off, it is important for exhibitors to utilize proper management techniques to keep livestock safe at exhibitions. First, exhibitors must be able to identify symptoms of heat discomfort in their livestock. Bernie O’Rourke, an Extension Youth Livestock Specialist, emphasized that animals experience heat distress much like humans do. “It should be, you know, really important to be managing and having those daily check-ins with your livestock and your project animals,” O’Rourke said. To minimize heat risk during transit, experts recommend transporting livestock during the cooler hours of the early morning or late evening.
