Steven Spielberg covers a great part of this story in Saving Private Ryan, a picture now widely considered the greatest war movie of all time. But is it really the greatest war movie? Saving Private Ryan is an engaging and innovative film, but it clearly doesn't match up to the magnificence that audiences got to see in the '80s. Saving Private Ryan certainly has an effective antiwar subtext, too, but this is perhaps muted by Spielberg's rescue mission plot and his preoccupation with brotherhood.
