Catholic communicators must ensure that Artificial Intelligence (AI) remains a tool in human hands and does not diminish human dignity, EWTN’s Regional Marketing Manager for Africa, George Wirnkar, has said. Addressing participants at the first-ever World Catholic Association for Communication (SIGNIS World) Congress in Africa, Mr. Wirnkar said Catholic media professionals should approach AI with both openness and caution, recognizing its potential to strengthen communication while remaining alert to the ethical and pastoral risks it presents. “When we as Catholics, as Catholic professionals, engage in media activity, we are not just telling stories,” he said in his Thursday, August 6 presentation that was titled “Addressing Challenges and Opportunities of Integrating Artificial Intelligence in Catholic Witness in Today’s World.” He added, “We are doing this knowing that we have an additional calling of bringing Christ and evangelising the world through these things we do.” Mr. Wirnkar acknowledged that AI can pose serious threats, particularly through misinformation, manipulated images, fabricated audio and other forms of digital impersonation.
