Born into the humble beginnings of a Mongolian family in the remote Bortala region of northwestern Xinjiang, Yunchaokete Bu faced a far from straightforward path to becoming a professional tennis player.
Bu surged in the rankings from just under the top two-thousand to within the top three-hundred in a year”Fast-forward to 2026 and before his debut at Edgbaston in the Birmingham Open, Bu had never won a match on grass before.
By the quarter-finals, Bu had clearly become accustomed to the grass and despite the test of Estonia’s hottest prospect Mark Lajal, he reigned supreme.
While Virtanen entered the final with the confidence of a defending champion, Bu carried the weight of recent heartbreak.
This was clearly the right choice, as Bu then went undefeated in Yorkshire to remarkably claim another title on grass, defeating Jacob Fearnley 6-3 7-6 in the final.
