The reasons for Japan’s major policy shift are quite clear. Consequently, Tokyo has embarked on its largest military buildup since the Second World War, raising defense expenditure to around two percent of GDP and acquiring long-range strike capabilities. Across Asia and the Middle East, governments are reassessing long-held security assumptions as regional conflicts and great-power rivalries reshape the strategic landscape. Very few nations enjoy productive relations with all three major powers simultaneously. Bangladesh’s response should not be to imitate any foreign powers military trajectory, nor to become entangled in the contest between Beijing and Washington.
