But under the direction of Michael Greif and Schele Williams and with a stellar cast, this production is largely a sturdy romance with somber undertones. Ken Wulf Clark as Middle Noah brings a layered mix of weariness (he lost his friend and took shrapnel to his knee in Vietnam) and against-the-odds optimism to the character. (So is a line for Middle Allie: When Middle Noah expresses surprise that she remembers something from their brief summer romance a decade earlier, she says, “I have a brain like fly tape.”) But The Notebook faithfully (but not dutifully) illuminates the original story, and the acting is first-rate.
