SRINAGAR: The Bandipora district administration has made it mandatory for households with adequate space to process their biodegradable wet waste through home composting, in a move aimed at reducing the burden on municipal waste collection and promoting decentralised solid waste management.
As per the notification, the Municipal Council Bandipora will discontinue routine door-to-door collection of wet waste from households with adequate space for composting from September 1.
“Every household having adequate space shall process its biodegradable (wet) waste within its own premises through home composting or any other approved mechanical composting method,” the notification said.
Bulk Waste Generators have been directed to establish and operate in-situ facilities for processing biodegradable waste in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
The move comes as Bandipora, like several other areas of Kashmir, faces growing challenges in managing increasing volumes of municipal solid waste.
