California could soon give local schools more flexibility to bring teachers from other countries into their classrooms. Assembly Bill 2056, now awaiting action from Gov. Gavin Newsom, would allow school districts, county education offices and charter schools to sponsor international teachers directly. The change could particularly affect recruitment from Mexico and Spain, two countries California schools have turned to for bilingual teachers. A similar proposal was vetoed by Newsom last year after he said schools already had the ability under existing law to expand international teacher sponsorships.
