Justin McIntosh: He wasn’t the joyful, tear-in-his-eye, a-cup-for-everyone-who-comes-to-his-house, red-haired, happy-go-lucky guy they depict in the Odyssey, that’s for sure, when Telemachus shows up.
But that’s not the Odyssey version — that’s the fifth-century BC version.
It always struck me that these gods are just playing, and they don’t really care — you’re just a pet insect to them.
