Spain on Friday threatened to take “proportionate measures” against Italy if Rome does not lift temporary border controls imposed after last week’s mass migrant crossing into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, according to Anadolu Agency. In a statement, the Spanish government said Italy’s decision to reintroduce border checks with Spain was unjustified, unprecedented in recent history, and implemented unilaterally without prior notice. Madrid gave Rome until August 9 to remove the controls. Spain said the border checks have disrupted travel for thousands of passengers during the peak summer holiday season and created legal uncertainty. Spain also criticized Italy’s migration record, saying EU border agency Frontex data show Italy has recorded about twice as many irregular border crossings as Spain in recent years, while noting Spain has never imposed border controls on Italy.
