Sweeney And Todd, located on Castle Street in the town centre, has been owned and operated by the Hayward family since May 1978.
The pie shop's Grade II listed building has been put up for sale on Rightmove, where it was described as a business having a net turnover of about £700,000 and a net profit of £140,000 for the financial year ending April 2025.
However, in a statement posted on X on Friday morning, August 7, Sweeney And Todd told customers that "despite rumours", they are not closing.
The pie shop said the business has been "up for sale, as a going concern, for quite a while now".
"But we are STILL HERE," they wrote, "and so are the PIES."
