Thundersley Great Common is an 8.9-hectare Site of Special Scientific Interest and is considered the finest surviving heathland in Essex. Pound Wood, owned by the Essex Wildlife Trust, is home to the rare heath fritillary butterfly, as well as spring bluebells and woodpeckers. The village is also bordered by West Wood, Shipwrights Wood, Tile Wood, and Coombe Wood, offering miles of woodland walks.
