Government has launched the National Carbon Registry, marking a major historic milestone in Zambia’s efforts to regulate carbon trading, strengthen climate action and attract climate finance through a transparent and accountable carbon market. Dr Chibamba announced that all carbon credit transactions in Zambia will now be conducted through the newly launched registry, following the establishment of the necessary legal and institutional frameworks governing the country’s carbon market. He said the launch marks the first phase of the registry, focusing on Article 6-aligned carbon market projects, while a second phase will incorporate voluntary carbon market registration, reporting and performance tracking. Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Country Lead, Angela Heinonen, said the development of the National Carbon Registry is truly a reflection of the maturity of the market in Zambia. Ms Heinonen said the development makes Zambia fully ready to participate in international carbon markets through its current and future bilateral agreements, thereby also increasing investors’ confidence in carbon market projects in the country.
