"If someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, a busy, noisy A&E department can exacerbate feelings of agitation and distress. Existing mental health services in the Department of Psychiatry are relocating to the new Combe Valley Hospital in Bexhill-on-Sea. Research undertaken as part of the RCN’s annual congress, found that around 500,000 children and young people in England have attended emergency departments in mental health crisis since 2019. NHS England plans to open similar mental health emergency departments nationwide to ease demand on general hospital A&Es. Three community mental health centres are also planned for Sussex for 2028, as part of broader efforts to transform urgent mental health care across the region.
