The US Senate on Friday passed a government funding bill that will prevent a shutdown through the midterm elections, though it still must be approved by the House of Representatives. The House had last month approved a different CR that would continue funding until 4 December. Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the Senate appropriations committee, said the House’s bill had “several major issues” that the Senate’s version addressed. The Senate CR also closes what Murray called a “loophole” in the House bill that would have allowed the White House to take money meant for other purposes and give it to the border patrol. While an agreement was reached to resolve that blockade, the two parties did not agree on funding DHS for weeks, as Democrats held out for reforms to immigration enforcement operations.
