(WCAX) - A Newport man faces a handful of charges after he allegedly threatened people passing by, and later assaulting a law enforcement officer. Vermont State Police say around 6:45 p.m. Friday, they got multiple reports of a man with a machete threatening people in the area of Main Street in Barton. Police say when they got there, the man, later identified as Kyle Lowe, 41, of Newport, had run off into the woods near the Barton River. When officers caught up with him, they say they tried to negotiate with Lowe and calm him down, but he ran off again. Officers chased Lowe into a cornfield near Elm Street, where he allegedly tried to tackle a trooper.
