The potential for electric aircraft to serve short-haul routes across Europe has been identified as a key pathway for aviation decarbonisation. European aviation innovators have made substantial progress in developing electric aircraft capable of flying 500km by 2030, with start-ups building nine-seater planes designed for short-haul routes. Electric planes offer reduced dependency on fuel, protection from oil price spikes, potential for renewable power sources and simpler maintenance. The technology has advanced rapidly, though passenger services on electric aircraft may still require several years before commercial availability. EASA shared in a written statement: “The agency points to technological progress that may enable cleaner, quieter operations on regional routes.”
