Orihuela City Council will receive €3.33 million from Spain’s Biodiversity Foundation after successfully completing the objectives of its “Refluye Mi Río” river restoration and flood-prevention project. The scheme restored areas along the River Segura, including Las Norias, Molino de la Ciudad, La Campaneta and Soto del Reguerón in Molins. The project focused on removing invasive plants, particularly giant reeds, which can obstruct the river, restrict water flow and increase flood damage. Footpaths and riverside areas were also recovered to make them more accessible and attractive to residents and visitors. The project was supported through Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and financed by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme.
