Between September 2024 and September 2025, there were around 1,100 incidents of members of the public straying into the Salisbury Plain training estate when they should not have been, according to Defence Training Estate regional commander for the South East, Lt Col Jens Gronn.
To drive home just how invisible live military activity can be, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has launched an interactive “Spot the Sniper” challenge using real photographs taken on Salisbury Plain.
“No one's going to try and stop you from going on the training estate on normal times,” he said.
“But if there's training going on of any sort, we really ask you not to go onto that training estate.
There's no point risking your safety or the troops' safety and interrupting really, really important training.”
