Be quiet, Miriam!
['Julie Burchill']

It’s widely believed that Kenneth Tynan was the first person ever to say ‘fuck’ on British television, in 1965.
But, wouldn’t you know, Miriam Margolyes had a go first, in a 1963 episode of University Challenge.
Sadly for her, the word was bleeped out and she’s been trying to make up for it ever since.
Being a ‘potty-mouth’ is one of the things Margolyes is famous for.
Reluctantly, having started out in full-on flamethrower mode, I came to the conclusion that there’s much to admire about Margolyes.
