Researchers at Aberystwyth University are examining how human-dog interactions in rural Welsh communities might contribute to the transmission of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. This parasite causes hydatid disease, a condition that affects humans and livestock and remains endemic in parts of mid-Wales despite long-term public health campaigns. Researchers will use GPS collars to monitor the movements of free-roaming farm dogs and analyse faecal samples to study their diets. The team will work with farmers, vets, public health experts, and dog owner groups. Dr Andrew Nelson, senior epidemiologist at Public Health Wales, said: "Hydatid disease, which can cause cysts in the liver or lungs, remains a significant public health concern.
