On this day in 1998, WE Fest kicked off in Detroit Lakes with pleasant weather, large crowds and country music fans eager for a weekend of concerts. Rather, as concert opener Lee Ann Womack took the stage shortly after 2 p.m., overcast skies and a gentle breeze kept fans calm, cool and collected. Concert organizers estimate a crowd of 50,000 strong for each of the three days of WE Fest. Another WE Fest first-timer, Johnson said the music wasn't his main draw. WE Fest continues today with performances by Sherrie Austin, Neal McCoy, Patty Loveless, Ronnie Milsap and Vince Gill.
