North Dakota reports 1st West Nile case of 2026; Cass County resident hospitalized

The North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed the first human case this season of West Nile virus, transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito.
So far in 2026, mosquito pools that were positive for West Nile virus have been reported in five counties: Cass, Grand Forks, Richland, Ward and Williams.
In Minnesota, West Nile virus reached “outbreak” status in 2025, with 120 confirmed cases and ten deaths statewide due to the virus.
Most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms.
The incubation period for West Nile virus is typically two to six days.
