Looming threat: climate change brings the threat to Bermuda of rising sea level and stronger storms (File photograph by Akil Simmons)The island must act now to get organised given its vulnerability to the threat of climate change, the Bermuda National Trust urged, saying the need for a working and co-ordinated Climate Change Task Force has “never been greater”. Walter Roban, the former home affairs minister, announced a climate task force in March 2022 to the backdrop of a $200,000 grant from the British Government for a study to assess the “inherent risks” presented by climate change. He said the BNT recognised the task force as “essential” in light of the island’s precarious position when it came to climate change. “The Bermuda National Trust believes the task force should be re-established as a priority, with clear objectives, strong leadership and regular reporting.” “These nature-based solutions align closely with the recommendations of the Smith Warner climate study and demonstrate that meaningful climate action is not only achievable, but ready to be implemented.”
