The year 1971 was a momentous one for prog rock. Rock music was suddenly taking itself very seriously indeed. But critics suddenly started lumping Tull in with the prog pack, which Anderson didn’t exactly take kindly to. “Bands like Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes and Genesis were seen as being bombastic, over-the-top, pain-in-the-arse, showing-off kinds of performers. Anderson’s response was to pour his scorn for critics and portentous musos alike into Tull’s next album, Thick As A Brick.
