Japanese gaming powerhouse Capcom has a reassuring message for anyone worried about the video game industry’s rapid march toward an all-digital future: they are practically there already.
While players and retailers have spent the last month expressing deep concern over what the shrinking physical market means for the medium, the publisher behind blockbuster franchises like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter remains completely unfazed.
According to the company, major industry shifts away from physical discs simply won't have a significant impact on its overall business, primarily because a massive 90% of its total game sales already come from digital channels.
However, when asked during a recent Q&A session what impact they anticipate from this shrinking physical game market in the medium to long term, Capcom’s official reply was confident.
"We do not anticipate a significant impact at this time.”
