Jaipur’s heritage at crossroads: Can Pink City balance development and conservation?
[]
The Shillong Times
Jaipur, Aug 8: Jaipur’s Walled City is more than a collection of old buildings.
Its broad roads, historic markets, pink facades, temples, havelis and traditional bazaars together form the identity of a city planned nearly 300 years ago.
The case has once again brought attention to the delicate balance between urban development and heritage conservation.
The Walled City was later recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, with its heritage value extending beyond individual monuments.
Municipal authorities must enforce regulations effectively, property owners must understand their responsibilities, and development must respect the architectural and visual character of the Walled City.
